by Tony Dennis
Following our story of unlocking Nokia handsets Unlock your Nokia phone over the phone,
Mobile Insight received numerous emails – mostly pointing out that in certain cases it is feasible to unlock a handset using free software. Which saves you the £7.50 you might otherwise spend.
Sirs,
This is an extract from my company's (one of the big four operators in the UK) procedures for telephone agents:
Conditions of giving out an unlock pin: -
[The customer must] have held an account with us for at least 1 month; have not requested three subsidy PINs in the last 12 months; not be in collections; and not have a blacklisted handset.
Advise the customer of the following: -
They must agree to pay £15 (Inc. VAT) for each request.
Be aware that if they are within their minimum term and decide to leave our network minimum term charges will apply.
We cannot guarantee full compatibility of phone features with other networks.
It is their responsibility to check if their specific handset will work on another network.
They may require an active SIM in order to unlock the handset (unless they have an Ericsson handset).
Advise the customer that their subsidy pin will be sent to them via letter within 28 working days.
Sirs,
Interesting article, but it might be worth pointing out that loads of the older Nokia handsets can be unlocked for free with the Cybergsm code calculator available.
