Technical Editors: | RTX offers instant wireless networkDanish Wireless specialist, RTX, claims it can fit all the gear you need to become your own telecoms provider into a suitcase. In essence the 'standalone wireless IP network' enables you to share a single broadband subscription and a single VoIP telephony service amongst as many people as you can fit into your 'community'. The suitcase provides all the necessary gear you need to set up including the gateway, repeaters, and cordless phones. Naturally the whole thing works by using standard Wi-Fi (802.11g) so –in addition to making low cost calls - you can also share the broadband connexion via a laptop PC or whatever. The unusual part to this product is that RTX also supplies an IP based PBX (switchboard) which runs Asterisk software. RTX claims this is one of the most popular and extensible open source telephone system programs in the world. RTX also says Asterisk offers flexibility, functionality and features not available in advanced, high-end (high-cost) proprietary business systems. Why would you need a switchboard? Well, if you're planning to make all your calls over the Internet, the switchboard will know which cordless phone or wireless computer to route the incoming calls to. According to Jorgen Elbaek, co-founder of RTX, "Our solution costs as little as €100 per subscriber". One very obvious target market for the system is groups of migrants living in close proximity to each other who all want to make international calls which would otherwise be costly via conventional fixed or mobile networks. The full Inquirer story ...
