Vodafone to issue Indian GSM contracts

Highly lucrative mobile infrastructure contracts could be awarded to Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia Siemens networks to the tune of around $1.8 billion. The money is going to be spent by Vodafone to build out the Vodafone Essar (formerly Hutch) network in India, according to a report in the country's Economic Times newspaper. Significantly the report said that Nokia Siemens Networks is likely to be the principal beneficiary. Motorola will mop up most of the rest with Ericsson getting to supply an MSC for Mumbai. India claims to be the world's fastest-growing mobile phone market - adding over six million users every month. Curiously Germany's Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile) played down recent reports that it too will seek to expand into emerging markets, saying its short-term focus in on Europe and the Netherlands in particular.
