Battery explodes in Nepalese Nokia phone

Rumours are circulating that a Nokia mobile phone exploded under the pillow of a Nepalese man whilst he was sleeping. The stories quote The Himalayan Times Daily as saying that the man, Zahir Miya Thakurai, a resident of Katahariya village in Bara district near the Indo-Nepal border, sustained face injuries when his Nokia mobile phone exploded. Mobile Software Insight can't trace this story, however. Consequently there's been no confirmation of whether the battery was genuine or a counterfeit. In Nepal Nokia suffers from the fact that as many as 90 per cent of the Nokia handsets in use are 'grey' imports. This is making it difficult for handset owners who possess one of the batteries which Nokia has recalled - the BL-5C made by Japan's Matsushita – to obtain a free replacement. Nokia has set up a SMS based service which will tell battery owners whether or not theirs is one of the faulty ones identified by the company. One report says that as many as 1,000 Matsushita made batteries have already been sent back to Nokia in Nepal.
