HTC scores major Japanese handset dealTaiwan's HTC has scored a notable victory by supplying new Japanese operator Emobile, with a version of its existing TyTN II handset. In Japan it will be known as the S11HT Emonster. Emobile has been quietly building its own network based on 3.5G technology in the shape of W-CMDA/HSDPA. Outside Emobile's coverage, subscribers will be able to roam onto NTT DoCoMo's 3.5G network. HTC claims that the S11HT will be "the first Emobile device to offer voice services." However, it will have to share that honour with the H11T from Toshiba which will ship alongside HTC's offering. Emobile is taking orders for the phones from March 1st and expects to offer the service by March 28th.![]() The idea is to provide a more competitively priced service than its rivals KDDI, Softbank (formerly Vodafone Japan) and NTT DoCoMo itself. Toshiba's H11T handset is a classic clamshell although it does have a built-in TV tuner for Japan's One-seg service. The S11HT is being positioned as Windows based smartphone which should provide easy access to email and browsing. Incidentally the name Emonster is derived from 'Emobile net smart phone terminal'. Some commentators have been confused by the handset's GSM capability. The device is being supplied 'unlocked' as standard which would enable the purchaser to insert a WDCMA/GSM USIM card while travelling abroad. No information was given on whether you could put a USIM from either DoCoMo or Softbank inside the handset. Certain analysts are questioning whether Emobile can survive with versions of just two main handsets. However, the Mobile Software Insight would point out that 3 UK survived without any Nokia handsets for ages. The full Inquirer story ... here www.emobile.jp/en/ |
