Samsung joins with Adidas for jogger phone

Samsung and Adidas have decided to jump in with another great fitness device – namely the Micoach. This is a new handset which they claim takes the place of a traditional personal trainer. Despite the hype, there's nothing particularly new about the idea. The Micoach simply puts together a number of facilities which have previously been made available with other devices. For example, the Micoach boasts a stride sensor - which straps to an Adidas trainer via the laces. This can calculate if you've slowed down too soon, how far you’ve gone and how much further you need to go. The handset can then bark instructions to you such as "Speed up" and "Ok. Let's go." That's pretty similar to the infamous Nike trainer which can communicate with an Apple iPod via a Bluetooth link. Plus the Nokia 5500 sport handset offered an pedometer so that it could calculate how far you'd run and it even had the option of linking to a GPS receiver via Bluetooth to tell you where you were, too. However, the Micoach monitors heart rate via a strap around your chest; tracks your stride rate while running/jogging and then calculates how many calories it thinks you've consumed. There's an optional arm band to make it easier to wear the handset while you're running. Quite frankly Mobile Software Insight reckons that no matter how many fancy fitness facilities the Micoach offers, the fact that it is also a good MP3 player into the bargain, is what will really help it to take off. For good measure, in addition to the 1 GB of memory as standard, it can also boast a two megapixel camera. According to Press reports the Micoach is set to go on-sale later in March, although the price can fluctuate between £150 and £300 depending on which contract you sign.
