Nokia First - successfully browsing Chinese Web through WAP
[November 30, 1999] Working with Beijing Mobile Communications Corporation (BMCC) and China
Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC), Nokia has demonstrated the use of
WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) to browse the Internet in Chinese.
It is the first time that Nokia WAP platforms and the Nokia 7110 media phone have been used to browse the Internet in Chinese, marking important
progress in Nokia's efforts to develop WAP applications for the Chinese market.
Nokia conducted the demonstrations using BMCC's GSM network and the Nokia Artus Messaging Platform. The Beijing Telecom Administration server acted as
the information source for the demonstrations.
WAP is an open global standard for communication between a mobile handset and the Internet or other computer applications. Using WAP-based platforms,
such as the Nokia Artus Messaging Platform, real-time mobile services such
as Internet-based plane schedules, weather forecasts, stock quotations, sports scores and news services will become available for mobile phone and
other mobile device users. At the same time, users can also connect to corporation intranets, accessing information such as corporation
directories, resources and even cafeteria menus.
According to an agreement earlier this year, Nokia, BMCC and CMCC will jointly develop WAP applications for the Chinese market.
Nokia can offer operators what few others in the industry can; a complete end-to-end WAP solution, including WAP gateways, mobile terminals, browsers,
and tools for WAP -based content creation and delivery. Nokia provides a range of infrastructure products that support WAP such as the Nokia Artus
Messaging Platform and the Nokia Artus SMS Center.
