Gameplay announces  launch of Gameplay Mobile for WAP phones

[ June 29th 2000] Gameplay Europe's gateway to games, has announced the launch of gameplay mobile a new wireless Internet service accessible via WAP capable mobile devices. This development is in line with gameplay's strategy of offering consumers the ability to buy, play and talk about games across all platforms.

Gameplay mobile offers users the potential to play games, buy games, read news reviews and, in the near future, create gaming communities from their WAP mobile phones.

At http://mobile.gameplay.com  users of mobile phones which support WAP can find the latest news on a condensed version of the gameplay magazine Spank! This is updated daily and includes reviews and previews across all platforms. Users can also play two highly entertaining games, specially developed by gameplay studios, Hairy Harry’s House and Arctic Love, and buy games from the shop.  A series of special offers will be featured in the shop especially for WAP users.

Gameplay has also set up a dedicated web microsite at www.gameplay.com/mobile where Internet users can find out more about gameplay’s WAP service and how to access gameplay mobile.

Tim Coles, UK Managing Director of gameplay, commented: “We are delighted to be working in the mobile internet arena and to have developed gameplay mobile to address the needs of roaming gamers. Gaming is one of the fastest growing arenas in mobile entertainment.  A recent report  by UK-based consultancy the ARC Group predicted that the worldwide market for mobile entertainment will grow from 19 million users in 1999 to 775 million in 2005.”

“Of these users, the vast majority will be using their phone as a games platform. Our WAP offering will therefore be a fine addition to our unrivalled suite of services. With our investment, backed by a highly qualified specialist team, we are confident that we will continue to keep gameplay at the forefront of the mobile Internet revolution."

Valentina Britten, Strategic Planning Director of gameplay, added:"Mobile users want to have fun and play games. At gameplay, they can now access services that suit their individual tastes and also keep in contact with their preferred gaming communities. The suite of games and services that we have developed will significantly enhance gameplay's community-building abilities as we expand across Europe. The potential for winning on-line gaming customers from both our existing 900,000 customer base and new customers is enormous”.

About Gameplay

Gameplay floated on London’s Alternative Investment Market (“AIM”) in August 1999 raising £31 million to establish Europe’s leading computer games portal, delivering its services via mail-order, the Internet and interactive digital TV.  Founded by industry veterans, Mark Strachan, Mark Bernstein and Colin Duffy, the company was formed in March 1999 and currently has over 900,000 registered users.  Dylan Wilk became a director of the new company earlier last year when it acquired ICE – the UK’s largest direct to home games retailer.

Gameplay’s Wireplay dial up gaming network is the largest in Europe and enables PC users to meet up and compete in a variety of games using the standard telephone network or via the Internet.

On 1 February 2000, gameplay announced the raising of a further £50 million, primarily to fund expansion in Europe.  In February, gameplay also signed a major agreement with Computec Media AG (“Computec”), Germany’s largest computer games magazine publisher.  Gameplay announced interim results on 8 March 2000, with turnover up 31 per cent to £5.83 million and the use of Wireplay up 160 per cent on the same period last year.
