Logica demonstrates the location sensitive i-mode experience

[May 3rd2001] Logica has stretched its lead in Mobile Internet browsing capability, developing the world’s first location sensitive i-mode experience. At an IBC/Euroforum i-mode roadshow in Amsterdam, Logica demonstrated an i-mode experience giving users Mobile Internet access to location-based services.

In practice this means that a mobile user can browse for the nearest restaurant, petrol station, 24-hour pharmacist, taxi services, people with shared hobbies, friends etc – indeed, any desired local information. This can be expressed as simple text to a browsable map in clear colour, depending on the capability of the devise.   The location is combined with user-stored preferences (Chinese food, cheapest petrol, size of taxi, etc), and the system searches databases to give the best and closest results. Logica will be working with handset partner Magcom, of Norway, and EZOS of Belgium, provider of EzWAP, the leading mobile internet browser for PDAs .

Gerry McKenna, COO of Logica Mobile Networks, said of the demonstration, “Here is a technology that is available on existing mobile platforms, and will give today’s service providers, operators and their subscribers life-enhancing applications. It is also a clear route to revenue for operators who are looking to market mobile data services which will quickly show their user-friendliness and usefulness.”
