Kingston-SCL provides France Télécom Mobiles with WAP trial for Itineris subscribers

[August 12th 1999]- Kingston-SCL (KSCL), the leading international provider of telecom management solutions, is strengthening its relationship with France Télécom Mobiles (FTM) by providing a key part of the billing solution to support FTM’s trial of mobile services based on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP).

During the trial, subscribers to FTM’s Itineris mobile phone service will enjoy quick and simple access to Internet services through their mobile phones.  With a few keystrokes they will be able to call up weather, news and traffic reports and directory services, and read and respond to them on the screen of their handset.  FTM plans to roll out a full WAP service later this year.  The Itineris GSM network has seven million subscribers, and is one of the fastest-growing in Europe.  Billing software for the trial was developed jointly by KSCL and FTM.

Jupiter, KSCL’s world-class convergent billing, administration and customer care system, already provides the billing platform for the Itineris GSM network – which has seven million subscribers, and is one of the fastest-growing in Europe.  Jupiter is designed to support the provision of next-generation data services over mobile phone networks.

Peter Burke, KSCL’s technical director said: “WAP is a breakthrough in voice and data convergence. It is spurring developments towards third generation mobile technology, to which KSCL is fully committed to supporting.  KSCL also believes in future-proofing its customers’ investment – with today’s announcement, we are working closely with FTM to help it develop tools which will help drive its market expansion into the next century.”

FTM has been a KSCL customer since it launched the Itineris GSM network in 1992. Earlier this year KSCL successfully migrated all of FTM’s Itineris subscribers to Jupiter in just 36 hours – the world’s largest-ever billing package upgrade.
