Maxis and Motorola Begin Push-To-Talk over Cellular (PoC) Trial

[May 17th 2004] Motorola Inc.’s Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS), a leader in integrated communications solutions, today announced that Maxis has begun a trial of its Push-To-Talk over Cellular (PoC) solution which enables people to connect with one or many users at the push of a button via their mobile phones.

The trial with leading mobile communications provider Maxis Communications Berhad will demonstrate the convenience and speed of one-touch communications for mobile workers and consumers. Maxis expects to offer PoC service to subscribers in the near future in handsets designed to incorporate this feature.

“PoC is attracting strong interest from network operators globally as an exciting new application that can generate additional revenue opportunities," said Simon Leung, senior vice president, Motorola, Inc. and general manager, GTSS Asia Pacific. “Motorola has a strong commitment to and is a significant contributor to the development of international PoC standards that will ensure the interoperability of different vendor’s handsets and server equipment. In fact, Motorola recently announced a program to license its PoC handset client software and protocol to third party handset manufacturers and software developers.”

“This PoC trial is another example of Maxis’ commitment to being the first to bring Malaysians the latest innovative and value-added services,” said Maxis’ Chief Operating Officer Edward Ying. “PoC will prove invaluable to our corporate customers with large and highly mobile teams of people, such as fleet management or logistics companies, as well as those in the service industry. It will also be useful to our non-corporate subscribers for coordinating their social and recreational activities.”

Ying also explained that PoC users would not be limited by distance, as they will be connected so long as they are in areas with GPRS network coverage.

“We are delighted to trial this new offering with Maxis,” said Bruce Duysen, regional director and general manager, Motorola GTSS. “Push-To-Talk over Cellular is attractive for mobile communications providers such as Maxis because it allows them to deliver a service differentiated from their competitors while appealing to business and personal users who want more convenient and exciting new ways of communicating.”

Motorola, a leading network provider in the Malaysian market, has a number of commercial PoC systems in North America and Latin America as well as PoC contracts in other regions including Asia Pacific. Motorola has a range of PoC products and services, from handsets to network systems and engineering support.

Motorola’s PoC solution works with both General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 2000 1X networks. It combines the flexibility of mobile messaging with the ease of use of voice, enabling mobile users to get a voice connection with another user or group of users by simply pushing a button on their handset.
