Intentia goes live with real time WAP access

[April 7th 2000] Intentia has announced it can now provide 'live', real time remote access to enterprise applications from a mobile phone or hand-held computer using WAP technology which is integrated into its Movex system. The company also claims it has taken a lead over its rivals by integrating 'seamlessly' its e-business components into its software to create an enterprise-wide "end-to-end solution".

The e-business enterprise application software group is successfully completing a number of WAP BETA tests and believes it is the first vendor to 'go live' with the technology. "We can offer online, real time WAP access today," says UK managing director Linus Parker. "It opens up a new mobile era for enterprise applications."

Parker says Intentia is beginning with applications for field service teams who will be able to manage their own work schedules and make new appointments if priorities change. "They will be able to use mobile devices to communicate direct, information such as status, service requirements and fault reports, order spare parts and update costs on the assignment. Movex WAP reads and updates the Movex database in real time."

Intentia believes there are many other applications that will give companies the opportunity to achieve a 'step change' in service levels. "WAP access will be extremely useful for sales teams wanting to bring 'real time' service to the selling environment," says Parker. "They'll be able to check stock levels, undertake product configurations and order processing - all in real-time. In finance there will be the opportunity to check the status of debtor days and cash flow."

Parker adds: "We believe the technology will make a big impact on business by encouraging a real-time 'work anywhere, anytime, any way' environment. And the impending availability of the new hand-held devices combining PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) with larger screens and a mobile phone, will increase usability substantially." He concluded: "When broadband finally arrives it will cause an explosion in content. And let's not forget that a mobile phone has both a microphone and an ear piece which raises the possibility of audio and video input."
