DP5 - Across' SAT server[February 2nd 2000] At the GSM World
Congress, Across Wireless unveiled the network side of the SAT technology, a
wireless Internet access system called Across DP5. This, the company's fifth
generation implementation of its wireless Internet access systems, has been
designed for content and service providers wanting to reach mobile phone users
with Internet-based applications. Interestingly, the DP5 server software supports
both WAP and non-WAP (i.e. SIM-based browser) mobiles, a move that means that
carriers can meet the Internet surfing needs of most mobile phone users using a
single system. Per Lundh, Across Wireless' director of marketing, said that the
excitement around mobile data services in general and in mobile commerce
specifically, means that there are thousands of companies wanting to deliver
information and applications to the millions of mobile phone users. Lars-Erik
Sellin, the firm's chief technology officer, said that wireless Internet is a
lot more than simply supporting browsing from WAP and SIM Toolkit handsets. One area, he said, is the area of service
provisioning, since without the means to remotely update WAP and other GSM
configuration files resident on the SIM or in the phones, it will be virtually
impossible to scale up the wireless Internet platforms in the real world.
"This is why we've included extensive over-the-air management capabilities
in Across DP5," he said, adding that these include other features like
support for location based services, a push interface and also content
publishing for most languages.
