Scoot.com and CPS announce alliance for wireless positioningPartnership will bring together market leading capabilities for positioning-based commerce (p-commerce) applications [May 12th 2000] Scoot and Cambridge Positioning Systems (CPS), have announced the formation of a partnership to cooperate in the development of a range of location-based Mobile Internet products, so-called p-commerce (positioning-based commerce) applications. Following the completion of technical discussions, the two companies will now jointly commence development of a new range of value added m-services (mobile services) to be made available to mobile network operators across the world. These new services will allow Scoot to further enhance the buyer and seller experience of its m-commerce and information services and CPS to gain access to a significant user base for its applications. Types of end-user applications which could result from this partnership include the ability to book a nearby restaurant and then receive a map showing how to get there. Another application could be to email all local car dealerships for a quotation on a new car - again, receiving location, directions and other details of the chosen supplier. Location- and content-based services will begin to come into their own as WAP phones gain in popularity. Commenting on today's partnership Charles Webb Chief Technology Officer of Scoot.com said: "The ability for Scoot to simply and efficiently provide its buyers with location based m-information and transaction services will be significantly increased through this partnership with CPS. Following on from our recent partnership announcement with Webraska on 11th May we believe Scoot, through the application of market leading technologies is uniquely positioned to exploit the rapidly developing m-commerce market space." Chris Wade, CEO of Cambridge Positioning Systems, added: "Scoot is recognised as a leader in web-based information content and related transaction services. When you combine this with our own location-based services for use with mobile phones, you have a powerful p-commerce proposition. Location is being seen as the fundamental enabler for next generation mobile phone services - and this alliance further signifies CPS' leadership in the location technology and applications space." About Scoot Scoot services operate in the UK and also in the Netherlands and Belgium. Scoot and Vivendi S.A. have recently established a joint venture to roll out the Scoot services across Europe during the next three years. |
