WAP geographical search engine launched in the UK

[April 25th 2000] UK geographical search engine, "Somewhere Near" (see http://somewherenear.com/ ) has announced the addition of WAP access to its existing web-based service. Somewhere Near allows users to search for places relative to a given position, e.g. to find the nearest pubs, hotels, curry houses, etc. With the addition of WAP access, mobile telephone users no longer have to lug a computer around to get such information whilst on the move.

There is no real limit to the kind of places that could be found on the site, since its database is constructed and evaluated by its users.  If they want to see a new place on the site, they simply add it.  If they think an existing place is inaccurately or inadequately described, they vote and comment on it. Mike Banahan, lead developer at Somewhere Near, commented: "This is a useful tool, despite the obvious limitations of low bandwidth and small screens.  I can think of plenty of occasions when I've been in an unfamiliar place with nothing but my the phone and all I've wanted to know is where to find the nearest decent pub or restaurant.  What I can't understand is why WAP and WML have stirred up such a fuss in the technical community.  There's simply nothing difficult or challenging about them".
