Strategy Analytics predicts 525 million WAP handsets shipped in the US & W. Europe between 1999 and 2003

WAP not seen as optimal but will whet user appetites for wireless data

[June 18th 1999] Strategy Analytics released a new study on WAP and Bluetooth this week which positions these two wireless data initiatives as the most significant to date for catalyzing overall demand. "These important first steps will simplify access to public and private domain data for business users and prime the pump for the commerce-supported consumer models to come." says Strategy Analytics Senior Industry Analyst Cliff Raskind.

The findings are presented in "Unwiring the IP Network with Global Standards: WAP and Bluetooth" from the Wireless Data and Computing Service of Strategy Analytics, Inc.

Citing the confluence of wireless and IP network prevalence as setting the stage for more widespread wireless data adoption, the report views WAP as a critical transition protocol to the emerging mobile multimedia arena. "WAP represents a relatively low-risk means of service differentiation for carriers and can serve to reduce churn as users become dependent on well built customer-profiles for information services." said Raskind. "Bluetooth and WAP extend the capabilities found in traditional PC's to more appropriate devices for the mobile realm which do not have the size, cord, battery and lengthy boot-up hassles of traditional PC's" he explains.

The report predicts that of the handsets shipped by manufacturers to the US and W. Europe in 2003, 95% will be WAP-enabled devices and 70% will have Bluetooth technology built-in.
