Text-over-IP offers free texting - Good News for SMS users

By Dr Adam Beaumont, founder, AQL

As an industry, we're constantly looking at future technologies and how they can be implemented and turned into useable products. Consequently, I can confidently predict that 'Text-over -IP' will be the next big thing as a perfect compliment to mobile VoIP.

It would appear that the mobile network operators are lagging behind the leading mobile phone manufacturers in the race to exploit IP functionality on handsets. Some of the big brands - like MSN and Skype -  can provide messaging-like and VoIP-like services on mobiles, but these major brand services suffer from a significant drawback - lack of interoperability with other systems.

The mobile handset manufacturers, however, have started to develop devices which support interoperable VoIP telephony. They will soon to incorporate Text-over-IP using simple protocols such as SIP, which is the most common protocol for internet telephony. Users of SIP based VoIP products should find that they will be able to communicate with their friends for free, even if their friend uses a different SIP based provider. Which is exactly what needs to happen if IP services are going to be used universally.

I would claim that t he AQL network tries to be future-proof. It is already capable of supporting Text-over-IP and has enhanced features that ensure that if the text message cannot be delivered over IP, it will still be delivered via 'good-old GSM'.
