Palmtop Software Unveils
TomTom
[April 3rd
2000] TomTom, a new mobile listings service, has been announced by Palmtop
Software. A personalised locations-based
service, TomTom can pinpoint a user’s exact location and provide
information on local leisure and business, a map and route planner. This unique
service can be used on WAP phones and
palmtop devices as well as next generation smart phones and communicators. The
service is also accessible from a PC using a web browser. Users can
request information on everything from restaurants to local garages and cinemas
– all whilst on the move. TomTom then displays the results via text or as a
highly detailed compressed map that pinpoints locations to one square kilometre
and highlights the best route. Uniquely, TomTom pre-empts the user’s needs
during the journey. If travelling by car, any traffic problems will be
identified and the best alternative route re-mapped. If walking, TomTom will
make use of any pedestrian shortcuts and locate any points of interest on the
way. “Palmtop Software has been developing leading mobile software for the
last nine years; our aim is always to offer people access to the kind of mobile
service they actually want and need. Our
new service, TomTom, is the first in the new generation of mobile services
offering people information that is genuinely personalised. With TomTom people
can be in complete control of the information they receive wherever they are,”
says Harold Goddijn, Chairman and
CEO, Palmtop Software. Palmtop Software
has designed TomTom to work with current mobile information devices.
Flexible and fully scalable, it makes optimum use of WAP technologies,
but has been designed with GPRS, G3 and smartphones in mind.
TomTom will be available in the next few months. TomTom offers unique locations-based listing services and route planners via WAP, smart phones and palm top devices. TomTom is a product division of Palmtop Software. Palmtop Software is the world’s premier software developer for Palm connected organisers, Windows CE machines, EPOC computers and compatible devices. Founded in the Netherlands, the company aims to design powerful yet easy-to-use applications for mobile devices.
