Trium claims first Pre-Pay WAP Phone

[March 10th 2000] Mitsubishi Electric is to supply the handsets for the UK’s first pre-pay WAP service, launched today by BT Cellnet.

The Geo-@ (WAP), from Mitsubishi Electric’s Trium range of mobile phones, will connect to BT Cellnet’s Genie Internet, enabling pre-pay users to obtain weather and traffic information, news and sports results among many other services offered through WAP.  An evolution of Trium’s Geo currently available on the market, the pre-pay Geo-@ (WAP) is representative of Trium’s on-going commitment to technological innovation.

The pre-pay BT Cellnet Geo-@ will be available in the high street, and via the Internet, from April 3, for £99.99 including VAT.  Mobile Internet calling will be charged at a flat rate of 10p per minute at all times and voice calls will cost 30p per minute at peak times and 5p per minute off-peak.  The handset will also be available with BT Cellnet post pay calling plans.

Geo-@ will offer an ever widening range of Internet services from Genie Internet, the company’s market leading Mobile Internet Service Provider, which has already linked with an exciting range of leading partners.  Customers with a BT Cellnet Genie Internet phone can simply register with Genie Internet – www.genie.co.uk – to be able to send and receive e-mails on their Internet phone.

The pre-pay Geo-@ comes with up to 200 minutes of free calls which can be used at the weekend for Mobile Internet access and standard voice calls.  New customers who connect between 3 April and 30 June 2000 will get double the number of bundled free minutes for a period of three months from the date of purchase.

Comments Richard Ward, Head of Trium in the UK: “Trium is delighted to have formed such a ground-breaking relationship with BT Cellnet and truly feels that this advancement in technology highlights our pledge to continuously deliver effective solutions to our customers and consumers.

‘Increasing the level of research and development into GSM, WAP, GPRS and UMTS to provide end-users with easy solutions to every day living, MEF is set to invest a total of €45m in R&D in 2000.  We anticipate that the manufacturing plant at Rennes (France) will produce more than 15m GSM handsets this year, increasing our market share across Europe to six per cent.’

Comments Grahame Riddell, BT Cellnet’s pre-pay marketing manager: "This is a landmark announcement which will enable us to take WAP to the mass market.

‘We expect sales of nearly all mobile phones, and other new mobile devices, to be Internet-enabled within 18 months.  By 2003 it is expected that more people could be accessing the web from mobile devices than from desk PC’s.’

Trium’s Geo-@ (WAP) boasts dual-band technology and weighs in at 145g whilst also offering an impressive range of advanced features.  These include a clock with alarm, Tegic intuitive text entry, data and fax facility, up to 3 hours talk-time or 150 hours stand-by time and a unique one-touch MOUSE to allow quick and easy scrolling through the stored phone numbers and functions of the phone.  Geo-@ (WAP) will be available in dark grey through the BT Cellnet packages.

Notes:

There are currently four Trium handsets available to purchase: Galaxy; Astral; Geo; and Aria.  MEF will launch a further 10 products during 2000.
