WAPfone
Schedules European Rollout
[January 10th 2000] WAPfone - an independent UK based WAP access gateway which is available
on all (five) mobile networks - is soon to roll out dial-up access in
continental Europe. Fonedata Ltd, who own the WAPfone dial-up gateway and
M-Portal - will start the ball rolling by introducing international access to
their gateway in time for the CeBit exhibition - allowing companies easy access
through the gateway for demonstration of WAP services and products. However Simon Luttrell, MD of Fonedata, has more ambitious plans.
"Providing international access is just the first step in our European
expansion. We intend to introduce
local points of presence in the major European cities during Spring and Summer
of 2000," he says. WAPfone uses the services of European Telco, Carrier,
and thanks to their optical fibre network coverage in continental Europe, the
implementation of local PoPs is a relatively easy task. "By providing local
access throughout Europe we can offer both end-users and content providers
access to a truly international market," says Luttrell.
"We're breaking down the barriers that are inherent to the mobile
telcos." WAPfone.com is a dial-up WAP access gateway and M-Portal which is
available on all UK mobile networks - at 0845 local call-rate charges.
The gateway was launched on January 10th, 2000 and offers 'open' access
to any compatible WAP site. The
WAPfone portal aggregates content from a range of consumer and business
originators. Fonedata are a Wireless Internet Services Provider and content
aggregator who also operate SMS 'pull' internet services on the Vodafone
network.
