Westel and Motorola trial WAP GPRS

[February 14th 2000] Motorola has once again taken its proven capability in wireless data to the market with the implementation of a general packet radio service (GPRS) mobile data network using the wireless application protocol (WAP) to enable mobile Internet access for subscribers on Hungary's Westel 900 GSM network.

Motorola's Network Solutions Sector (NSS) is implementing GPRS networks for operators world-wide, and showcased a complete end- to-end solution for GPRS, including a range of applications and services, billing mediation and end-user IP billing capability, at this year's GSM World Congress in France.

That demonstration was turned into a reality for Westel 900 as Motorola NSS enabled a trial of WAP services over GPRS for the leading Hungarian operator in under two weeks – from implementation to service. The system solution for Westel 900 includes a complete Internet protocol (IP)-based GPRS core network infrastructure solution using routing technology from Cisco Systems for fast Internet access; and Motorola's GPRS WAP- enabled Timeport 7389i handsets.

Motorola is implementing countrywide GPRS networks for Telsim in Turkey, T-Mobil in Germany, RadioMobil in the Czech Republic and BT Cellnet in the UK, and has ongoing trials with some 20 operators worldwide. In partnership with leading European GSM operators such as BT Cellnet, France Telecom, and Mobilkom Austria, Motorola GPRS system solutions have enabled the world's first live GPRS calls.

Westel 900 GSM - the market leader GSM operator in Hungary had more than 900,000 subscribers by the end of January. Westel 900 is the first, and to date only, GSM operator to launch WAP services in Hungary.
