What is SMS?

SMS for Short Message Service - more popularly known as text messaging and is the name given to the means by which brief textual messages can be sent over a mobile telephone network. SMS is the proper term for this facility on GSM networks where the maximum length of the message is 160 characters. Other mobile network technologies – such as TDMA  and CDMA –  have implement SMS is a slightly different manner. One crucial point difference is that many TDMA handsets did not support the creation of  messages on the handset (known as Mobile Originate), although they could receive messages (known as Mobile Terminate). Some confusion was caused by WAP 1.0 based phones which used SMS as the physical medium to send and receive ALL data rather than using the full range of IP based protocols as WAP 1.1 did. The first step up the ladder from basic SMS is EMS (Enhanced Message Service) intended as an 'Open' standard to rival Nokia's Smart Messaging. The very latest upgrade to SMS is MMS (Multi-media Messaging Service).
