What is QR code?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional bar code that can be read by a mobile handset. They originate from technology developed a decade ago when Japanese company Denso Wave created a barcode standard as an inventory aid for Toyota Motor factory lines. A QR code can hold 50x more information than a traditional barcode. However, a QR code is two-dimensional and can be read horizontally and vertically unlike traditional barcodes, which can only be read in one direction. A QR code can contain up to 1,000 characters compared to a maximum of 20 characters in traditional barcodes.

QR codes on business cards allow handsets to automatically save contact information directly into a mobile phone's addressbook.

There are several free QR code generators on the Web. This is one from NTT DoCoMo ... QR-factory version 3.2 (6.00 MB)
